In the United States, there are no federal laws that mandate or regulate recycling. The only laws concerning waste disposal are ones that regulate hazardous or toxic waste, as well as landfill management. For this reason, there is a wide variety of state and city-level recycling initiatives and laws.

Types of Recycling and Waste

Responsible dumpster rental companies try to comply with all of these laws as they apply in each location, and have different policies for different types of garbage.

Below we explain the general categories of waste and recyclable materials to help you in making your waste removal plan. For assistance at any point in the process, call Dumpster Rental USA!

Recycling Dumpsters for Disposal of Household Recyclables

These days, there are numerous categories of household waste that can be recycled if they are separated at the point of origin. Unfortunately, every state and location has its own guidelines when it comes to recycling, so there are no single standards for what is a recyclable and what isn't. There are, however, materials that are recycled practically everywhere.

newspaper recycling container Almost every location will accept and recycle "clean" (separated and un-contaminated) dumpster loads of:

  • Brick and cinderblocks
  • Asphalt
  • Cardboard and paper
  • Concrete slabs and debris
  • Scrap metal
  • Wood (as long as it's not painted and chemically treated)

Recyclables must be kept separately from other types of waste in order to be treated as such. While some locales have implemented "single-stream recycling," where materials are received in bulk and sorted at a facility, most towns and cities don't have such facilities yet, and sorting waste falls to the person or organization disposing of them.

For Recyclables dumpsters, a standard contract includes 10 days' rental, except in California, where the rental period is 7 days.

Hazardous waste includes any toxic or volatile chemicals, flammables and explosives, such as freon, flammable paint, asbestos, fluorescent lightbulbs, aerosol cans, pesticides, fertilizers, batteries, electronic appliances that contain heavy metals, mattresses, medicines, infectious materials and medical waste and any other materials subject to federal or state waste regulations.

recycling tires Rubber tires are also disallowed from landfill trash in more than 30 states, but it's not an issue of hazard or toxicity unprocessed tires simply take up too much space, since over 75% of a tire's volume is air. Tires can be dumped at a landfill after having been shredded or compacted although the same processes can also turn old tires into mulch and other useful products.
